Suspended Extraction And Suspended Insertion

General Information

Suspended extraction is a fast way to move troops from a hot zone when the aircraft is unable to land.

When suspending a “live” load of people, it is never recommended that the cargo hook under the aircraft be solely used. It was never designed for this purpose and is unreliable. The use of a “Y” strap is a common method for backing up the cargo hook. First used by our team in the 70s when winches were not available. Larger aircraft may have the ability to have an RAD (rope attachment device) installed and forgo the cargo hook altogether. This type of rigging is easy when you have had the correct training.

Highlighted Information

Suspended insertion is common when a helicopter winch is not available and relatively short distances are involved. Again, correct pilot and crew training is critical. This method can be easy and relatively safe or extremely dangerous.

Our consultants have all had firsthand experience piloting, and as the rescuer on the end of the suspension line. We understand what is at stake.
