HELICOPTER WINCHING

General Information

The art of using a properly rated aircraft winch to insert and extract personnel. To say that our crew are some of the most experienced operators in the world would not be an overstatement.

To operate safely and efficiently, all members of an aircraft crew require specific training. The communication between the winch operator and the pilot must be flawless. In many cases the pilot cannot see enough to maintain safety & accuracy without help. It is the crewman who must “con” the aircraft with the pilot. There must be strong threads of communication, a common language called “patter”. There must be trust that the crewman will not “con” the aircraft into a cliff or tree. This takes training, practice and time to develop the synergy.

Highlighted Information

The winch is robust yet delicate. It can be easy to unknowingly damage the winch and cable. This has resulted in catastrophe in the past. Crew must learn how to best treat the equipment to avoid catastrophic failures of the cable. This involves an understanding of the forces involved and how best protect the equipment from excessive and unusual forces.

Our pilots and winch crew have decades of experience, and their knowledge is critical to the safe operation of the aircraft. Your pilots need to be trained and assessed by pilots with such experience.

Water rescue with a winch is particularly challenging and is a speciality of our team. We all began in an air-sea rescue role and collectively developed the current techniques popular around the globe. Including the floating highline system on Paramedic Lisle below.
