AIRBORNE RAPPELLING
General Information
A technique used to access the ground when the aircraft cannot land in the area of significance.
This is a technique that is useful for tactical and medical scenarios. Airborne rappelling is relatively safe when conducted in an expert manner, and extremely dangerous when it is not.
Pilots and crew require expert training for their roles in this exercise. The gear and its use are also mission critical.
Highlighted Information
Airborne rappelling is preferred over suspended insertion because it allows the aircraft to fly long distances faster with less safety restrictions, while allowing the rappeller greater control over their insertion. In recent times our team located a lost group, and then inserted 2 paramedics into the Borneo jungle through 200-foot trees to reach a seriously injured casualty. No other technique could have worked.
